Tigers Jaw @ Rebel Lounge by Javi Perez

October 29, 2018

Can you believe it has been 10 years since Tigers Jaw self titled was released? Or as I remember it, the pizza album. 10 years ago I was 12, putting on black eyeliner ONLY on my waterline and playing music so loud that it would result in hearing loss in the years to come.

The show started with Cave People, a band I had never heard of before but they assured me that they were the “#1 band tonight” per their poster sign on stage. Salt, their recent release, provides some warm, emo vibes just in time for the fall. All the proceeds of the sales go to Juntos, an immigrant Rights organization, which is really incredible to see.

The Sidekicks played next. I had also never heard of them before but they played a really good set. Their new album, Happiness Hours, is a beautiful array of bright, punchy songs, however, the songs detail sadness through the cracks. The album cover is really pretty and I recommend you checking it out! Also the album was produced by John Agnello, who produced bands such as Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr.

This tour, giving fans a chance to revisit Tigers Jaw, being played in its entirety is something so special. It is like hearing the record on vinyl, front to back but a thousand times better. They opened their set with newer songs off of their more recent releases, Spin, and Charmer. They played my favorite song, "Slow Come On," which I’m pretty sure I’m responsible for at least half of the plays it has. They took a quick pause, and came back on stage to play the full self titled album. Tigers Jaw is so iconic, they are only 5 years older than me but at a young age, wrote an amazing record that resonated with so many people. It houses some of the most popular songs such as "Plane vs. Tank vs. Submarine," "Never Saw it Coming," and "I Saw Water." The crowd was going insane, there were crowd surfers, it was impossible to stand in one place but the energy was overflowing. However, someone went on stage and took the setlist, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SET! How are they supposed to know what is next? Granted it's the same order as the album but still, please don’t do that. I believe she got kicked out of the venue after. Now the most surprising thing, their bassist, Luke Schwartz, was wearing a full white outfit, WHITE JEANS people! I would get them dirty just by breathing so honestly, props to Luke. In all, it was a great time, it felt like we were all kids again, finding out about how great Tigers Jaw is.

Here are some photos, enjoy!
