For me "Motel to Motel" is a playlist that reminds me that change is okay and inevitable so why not positively go with it. It's one playlist I can keep chasing after the next song to get lost in with its dream tones.

A Playlist for May by Larson Rogers
To bring May to a close, we asked photographer Larson Rogers to create a playlist for us.
"I wanted to feature songs that I find myself listening to every summer no matter what. Most of these songs have been a constant repeat for me since my sophomore year of high school. They remind me of quiet summer nights when you’re driving around during blue time with your windows rolled down, or staying up late and opening the windows in your room so you can feel the warm breeze blow through and hear the buzz of the cicadas in the trees. I feel like those are my happy places and for me these songs always take me there."

A Playlist for April by Grace B.
To bring April to a close, we asked artist Grace Baek to create a playlist for us.
"The songs in this playlist are all very near and dear to my heart. These are the sticky tracks that keep me listening over and over because the mood in each is so potent-- I think if there were a theme it would be sentimental + optimistic. I've always loved a sad song but lately I've been into more of the reflective, uplifting ones to keep me happy and focused, and listening to a lot of old faves for a comfy transition into the new season."

A Playlist for February by Charlotte Bumgarner
To bring February to a close, we asked singer-songwriter Charlotte Bumgarner to create a playlist for us.
"These are some songs I've been listening to throughout the month of February. They are kind of an eclectic group of songs ranging from Joni Mitchell to Bikini Kill. Some of these are old favorites and some are songs that have just been released. I didn't realize until I wrote it out how many local bands I included. Planet What and Downward are local Tulsa bands who deserve more credit than they get! The Phlegms are from Fayetteville and were introduced to me by Kylie from Planet What. I also realized now that I look at it that all the lead singers of these bands are female or nonbinary except Downward. I tend to listen to more female and nonbinary musicians subconsciously. I hope someone finds a new band they love from this playlist!"

"La Carte" : A Playlist by Kara Vorabutr
To bring January to a close, we asked artist Kara Vorabutr to create a playlist for us.
Kara’s playlist, “La Carte,” has such a dreamy vibe and is a playlist that you can turn on in your room and dance to or listen to while taking a walk on a sunny afternoon. We hope you love "La Carte" every bit as much as we do.

"This month my playlist had a mix of brand new releases as well some older songs that I found myself thinking about for days on end and that all shared a certain feeling of triumph to me." - Zoë Bridgwater (zb)

"Dancing Alone on a Summer Night" : A Playlist by Vanissa Usallan
I made this playlist to resemble that feeling of loosing track of your thoughts and just dancing alone until you can’t dance no more. The songs in this playlist make me want to groove and sing at the top of my lungs or just sway back and forget life’s struggles. It’s a feel good playlist and perfect for a summer night in your room to dance to like there’s no tomorrow.

"been stuck in a weird dreamy haze" : A Playlist by Zoë Bridgwater
Summer has always been a strange time for me because I constantly feel like everything is changing but at the same time as if everything is exactly the same as it's always been. The past few weeks have felt very weird because I keep thinking about certain people and past times again and again but I've also been thinking about the months ahead. With this playlist I tried to capture these contradicting feelings with some of my all time favorite songs.

"Sol y Sombras" : A Playlist by Molly Alexander
I wanted to work off of the middle ground feeling between the unfiltered sense of warmth, love, and spontaneity of summer and the mellow moments of contemplation staring out car or plane windows. I made this while traveling in Spain to keep me grounded, happy but not too giddy, and remind me of those I love and miss back home.

“What inspired me most when creating this month’s playlist was actually the memories I have with Zo from sitting in computers class trying to drown out the other kids screaming at each other with our cheesy Pandora stations and iPod Nanos. As a senior getting ready to graduate I miss those times even though if you had asked me then I’d never have thought I’d ever be saying so.” - Zoey Martinez (zm)

"Creating a Mood" : An Interview with Playlist Bitch
February 19, 2018 / interviews, music, playlists
Playlist Bitch is a playlist generator, newsletter, and blog. Visit their website to sign up for their newsletter, follow them on Spotify to listen to their playlists, and follow them on Instagram to stay up to date with them.
We asked Sydney of Playlist Bitch a few questions about how she decided to create a weekly newsletter dedicated to sharing playlists and about some of her current favorite music.
DISSOLVING FILM: Could you tell us about how you came up with the idea for Playlist Bitch?
PLAYLIST BITCH: I came up with the idea for Playlist Bitch one day at work after A. texted me asking for "new music." These days, music is so accessible on streaming platforms that people get more lazy about finding music. That's why people turn to playlists...but...even playlists are hard to find! So I had the idea to follow the model of The Skim or Clover Letter - with a weekly newsletter delivered to your email every week with a new playlist. After a year working in marketing, I saw that "shareable" content followed a very similar pattern. So, I decided to include a profanity in the title and brand the newsletter in millennial pink. Shareable!
How do you come up with the themes for your playlists?
Playlists are supposed to create a mood or supplement a specific activity - so that's my goal! In terms of names of playlists, I try to make them extremely specific, so that they seem personal and relevant to the listener! I think playlists are sometimes named things too broad like "chill music" or "good vibes"... why not just make it "plane ride to thanksgiving" or "dad's taco making playlist." People are more inclined to connect with something they're familiar with! Plus, I love coming up with the names. Music wise, I work with the mood I'm trying to create and just listen through tons of songs. Haven't really perfected my process yet.
Do you have any thoughts on the role of social media in the music world?
Social media is HUGE in music these days. It's a window into an artist that used to only be accessible through a speaker. People like being part of the story, seeing an artist grow and make music. In terms of Playlist Bitch, I work primarily on Instagram because I see it as the most relevant platform for musicians/people who follow musicians.
What were some of your favorite albums last year?
Ah, my favorite album...Ctrl by SZA. She should've won a Grammy. Smh.
What albums are you excited for this year?
SUPER excited for Maggie Rogers to make more music. You know what's weird, I don't really anticipate new albums. I listen to what's put in front of me. Then, when a new album is out I'm pleasantly surprised!
Is there anything else that you would like our readers to know about you?
Ooooh....let's see. Nah, I'll keep it mysterious. I guess I'll say we have a newsletter which is pretty cool.
