Welcome to this month’s editors' letter!

Last month we featured a wide variety of submissions ranging from music to poetry to photography as well as a couple mixed media pieces, and they were each so incredible and unique. Dissolving Film has some very exciting news about our mag coming out this month, so keep an eye out for a post regarding that! It’s something we have always thought about from the very beginning of two girls sitting on the bedroom floor dreaming out loud about an online zine. We can’t wait to let you all in on our secret!

We thought it would be a fun change to add something new to our editors' letters, and ultimately we decided on briefly talking about some of our current favorites - which this month happens to be reading! Zoë’s pick for the month is Patti Smith’s book The Coral Sea and Zoey’s pick is Neil Gaiman’s book Coraline.

"I just started reading The Coral Sea by Patti Smith and I already love it so much. Smith wrote in the introduction how this collection of poems and photographs was, in a way, her first attempt at writing Just Kids and in some instances you can see how some parts would later be incorporated into the novel. Reading The Coral Sea is like reading excerpts from a journal as Smith captures so closely her personal connection with Robert. I highly recommend it (and all of her other poem collections/short stories/albums <3) to anyone who loved Just Kids." - Zoë (zb)

“I’ve loved reading my whole life, and I definitely got my love of reading from my parents. If a book was ever made into a movie I was usually one to read the book before watching the film. However, this was not the case for Coraline. The movie has always been special to my dad & I - we watch it together multiple times a year. I just now got my hands on the book and started reading it and I am absolutely loving it! It it way creepier than the movie and I would highly recommend this if you’re looking for a spooky pick.” -Zoey (zm)

A new month has begun and that means that it's time for another editors' letter! In case you're a new follower or haven’t seen one of these before, our editors' letter is a monthly post we write catching you up on some things from the previous month as well as some things we’re excited about in the upcoming month. We might even throw in a few things we’ve just really been loving as of late!

Summer is officially upon us, and while sometimes the heat can seem unbearable, we really do love that summer allows for a break from school and more free time to create and do more of what we love. This past month we have had lots of music related content ranging from playlists, to reviews, to sneak peeks of fun new music. Coming up this month we have even more music related content as well as many beautiful photography submissions. We are incredibly excited to share them all with you!

Welcome to another month at Dissolving Film! May marks the beginning of summer for some as school wraps up for the year which always come with a strange mix of excitement and sadness or nostalgia. It also marks the release of Father of the Bride, Vampire Weekend's incredibly long awaited fourth album which we are currently obsessing over <3.

In the month of April we had lots of submissions ranging from photo sets to interviews to poetry to playlists, and we loved each one! This upcoming month we have a multitude of photo submissions as well as another new playlist. We always love to see your photo diaries, journal entries, art pieces, short films, pieces of writing, playlists etc. as long as it is art and/or music related. Whatever medium you are inspired to create with we would love to share it with our readers and we are always accepting submissions, so don’t be afraid to share (dissolvingfilmmagazine@gmail.com)!

April has begun which means that spring is well underway! Spring is always such a refreshing time of year when everything comes alive. We love everything about it!

In March, we had contributions to some ongoing columns of ours as well an interview with Elena Majecki and some beautiful photo sets. Coming up this month we are extremely excited to share with you another interview, an incredible photo series, and a special playlist! We always adore seeing the passion behind each and every submission we get and the uniqueness that each creator exudes.

As always, our inbox is open (dissolvingfilmmagazine@gmail.com) and we hope that you feel inspired to send in some of your own work. Your submission does not have to be part of a column on our site but can be any medium as long as it is centered around art and/or music.

March has officially begun and we have some exciting submissions to share with you this month (including some new editions to our “My I Love You” column and exclusive interviews with two super cool people)!

In February we featured several lovely submissions, such as personal pieces of writing and photo diaries. We truly get so excited every time we see an email in our inbox with a submission coming from one of our dear followers’ hearts. Our email is always open for submissions and you don’t have to submit something pertaining to one of our ongoing columns. You can submit any piece of work you choose ranging from drawings/paintings (digital or hand made), photos (digital or film), collages, zines, poems, journal entries, playlists, original compositions/lyrics, etc. We always love seeing your creativity and unique ideas.

As always we would also like to take the time to thank you for your support because we could not continue to run Dissolving Film without your support!

February is upon us and we couldn’t be more excited over here at Dissolving Film. We’d like to start by giving a short recap of the previous month and what happened in regards to our website/social media. In January we launched a new column, “My I Love You”! This column is all about people’s favorite things, ranging from people, music, architecture, artwork, anything really. We created this column in hopes that it would bring people together. Talking about your favorite things and sharing that with a large group of people feels very vulnerable, but it also allows you to connect with people you may have never interacted with otherwise. We’d love to see any contributions you may have to this column (just email us at dissolvingfilmmagazine@gmail.com)!

Something else we are carrying over to the month of February is having someone outside of Dissolving Film create a playlist for the month. We absolutely loved the thought and creativity that Kara put into her playlist and how her playlist brought something new to the table. The idea of bringing in all sorts of tastes in music is so exciting to us! During the month of February, we will have lots of new submissions going up that feature all sorts of mediums, so stay tuned for those.

Finally, as always, we want to take a moment to express our love and gratitude for this platform and everything that comes with it - including you! (Also, what would a February editor’s letter be without a mention of love?). Thank you for sticking with us so far and we hope you decide to stick around a little longer!

It’s out with the old, and in with the new. Hello 2019!

We are extremely excited for the new beginning and fresh start that another year always brings. We understand that while the holidays are tons of fun for some, for others the holidays can be a hard time and we are sending lots of hugs your way as you have made it past another difficult time.

Starting next week we are taking this time of growth and expansion to expand our site! A new column has found it’s place with us, “My I Love You.” In this column, we ask someone to tell us all about their current favorite things, and why those things mean so much to them. It's a wonderful way to get a sneak peek into someone's life. We so often find (especially on social media) that you can feel distant and it can be difficult to connect with others, so our hope is that this column will be a start to bridging that gap (you might even see some of our staff being interviewed for this sometime!).

We are so thankful for each of you coming into the new year with us. We would also LOVE to hear your suggestions regarding what you would like to see from us in the upcoming year. Let us know by sending a dm or an email (dissolvingfilmmagazine@gmail.com)!

December is such an exciting time of year and is very dear to our hearts. This time of year is all about spending time with the people you love, whether that’s family or friends. We’d love to see any and all submissions revolving around how you like to spend your holidays because that is what makes each of us unique!

As always we’d also like to take a moment to express our gratitude for you all. While it’s nice to receive things from loved ones it’s also important to consider the things you already have that you are thankful for. When we think about what we’re thankful for, Dissolving Film and the people that support us (you!!!) are at the top of the list.

We would also like to give a humongous thank you to Rookie and everyone who worked on it over the years. Thank you for making such an incredible platform and safe community for teenagers (especially teenage girls) everywhere. Thank you for helping to make us feel like we belong and that we are not alone in the world.

Halloween is over, which means we’re at the beginning of November. As sad as saying goodbye to Halloween is, we’re so excited about what this month is bringing! We’d like to start off by saying thank you to our incredible staff and to everyone who helps support our mag and what we do. It’s insane to think this time last year we had about 500 followers, and now we have over 900! We couldn’t have the platform we do if it weren’t for all of you, so once again thank you.

As most of you may know, we did a collaborative playlist for the month of September, anyone could submit songs they wanted and the two of us (Zoë and Zoey) compiled them into one big playlist on our Spotify. That being said, we are bringing that back this month! We’d love for you to submit any songs, specifically ones that make you think of this fall transition time. We can’t wait to see what you come up with!

October is upon us and we’ve got some exciting things coming up this month!

We are adding a part two to a series from last year (more info coming very soon!) and will, of course, have another volume of zb's Spooky Mix coming at the end of the month. We also have some exciting submissions to share with you throughout the month so stay tuned.

We are so excited to see your contributions this month! With Halloween creeping closer, we can’t wait to see what creative things come out of October. There always seems to be a shift in atmosphere as soon as October hits and we would love to see how you capture it whether that be through short films, playlists, journal entries, collages, drawings/paintings/sketches, lyrics, whatever your medium of choice. This September we welcome a new column to Dissolving Film, but we need your help coming up with a name! We’ve already received one submission and have more coming, so if you’d like more details, look seven pictures back on our profile. We are overwhelmed by the interest you all have displayed and are very excited to get the column started (thank you so much Alessandra + Brenda for kicking off this column)!

This month we also want to try out a new type of playlist to end the month with: a collaborative playlist! All month our email is open to music suggestions and then at the end of the month we will add some of the suggestions that we really liked to the playlist!

We hope that you stick around this month because we have some incredible submissions to share with you by some amazing creatives. Another warm welcome to the month of August!

August is simultaneously an amazing month as well as a sad month. Amazing because it is still summer and the days are full of endless possibilities. But sad because for some these days of possibilities are dwindling. However, one thing we have found that helps with the dread of business and going back to school is making time for the things you care about, whatever that may be. Set aside even just 15 minutes every day to sneak away and read a chapter of a book that you love or draw in your sketchbook while listening to music. It can be easy to get carried away in everything but if you set aside that time for yourself it makes a world of difference. July is a month that is very near and dear to our hearts because two years ago this July two teen girls got together and discussed starting an online magazine, sparking the creation of Dissolving Film. We’ve both learned and changed a lot since that summer day almost two years ago, but Dissolving Film is still very meaningful to us and we cannot wait to see the ways in which we grow this next year!

It's thanks to people like you who continue to support us (whether that's been through being on our staff, submitting your work, or supporting the wonderful artists whose work we've published or highlighted) that we are able to keep Dissolving Film going. We really cannot thank each and every one of you enough for making Dissolving Film the inclusive platform for creative voices that we always envisioned it to be.

We hope that if you have ever thought about submitting before (or you are interested in submitting again) that this month you make it happen! We love seeing all of the incredible work that you create and want to help you share it with others. June is now upon us which means that summer is almost here!

Summer is often seen as a time of growth and rejuvenation--it is a time for rediscovering albums, artists, films, books that you had forgotten how much you loved and for discovering new albums, artists, films, books. It is also a time to examine the world around you with a deeper understanding than you might have had last month and to take a closer look at the bonds that you have with the people and things around you. You now have more time to spend doing the things you love, whether that’s reading, listening to music, writing, or creating. We always love to see playlists, photo diaries, journal entries, art pieces, short films, pieces of writing, etc. as long as it is art and/or music centered. Whatever work you are inspired to create from these sensations, we would love to share it with everyone and we are always accepting submissions, so don’t be afraid to share!

May is here! This means school is coming to a close for the year and with that can come a lot of emotions. For some that may be stress, for others it may be relief, and for some it may be a kind of sadness because a chapter of your life is ending. No matter what you may be feeling, there are others out there who are feeling the same way. Something that we find helpful during a moment of intense emotional overload is taking the emotions that we are experiencing and creating something out of them. We’d love to see everything you all have to offer in terms of your art or music or writing, anything really (just email us)! When you share your work with us it gives us a special sense of connection with you and we love that.

We wish you all the best with your endeavors this month whether they be school related or not. You can accomplish anything!

Spring is in full swing and we couldn’t be more excited. With the end of the school year coming and things starting to grow back and blossom, what’s not to love?

Hello March and hello to all of you!

We hope that everyone is doing well and that the craziness that comes with spring semesters in school and the overall pressure to use this starting over time to get your life together hasn’t hit you quite yet, although we’re not sure we can say the same about ourselves. That being said, it’s important to take time and set it aside for things that are important to you, and for us, that’s Dissolving Film. We love having a space where we can take a break from our busy and crazy lives and just be creative and share our own passions as well as others.

The past year was incredible and we are so thankful for everyone who helped us grow and become bigger and better. We hope to continue this growth throughout the next year and would LOVE to hear your suggestions on how we can improve and be the best we can be.
